Tom has been studying martial arts since his teens. He holds certifications in Wadoryu Karate and Viet Va Dao, a black belt Hung Kuen Shaolin Kung Fu and has been certified at advanced level (with distinction) at Yang style tai chi and Dragon style kung fu by the University of Hong Kong. Tom has also holds a teaching certificate from the Cheung Kwok Tai Wushu Association in Hong Kong qualifying him as an instructor of Dragon style kung fu, Tai Chi and Water Boxing. Tom is also the UK ambassador for the Cheung Kwok Tai Wushu Association.
For 7 years, Tom lived in Hong Kong and studied Chinese kung fu directly from one of the world’s greatest masters, Cheung Kwok Tai. Master Cheung is well known throughout the martial arts community as a leading authority on Chinese kung fu and Chinese medicine, having learned from Grandmasters Lam Yiu Gwai and his son, Lam Kwun Gong. Master Cheung is a judge for the China wushu tournaments, a Chinese National Tai Chi Gold Medallist and is the current head of the Dragon Sign Athletic Association. For 3 years out of his time in Hong Kong, Tom trained with Master Cheung for 7 hours every day, giving him a depth of ability and understanding of Chinese kung fu that is incredibly rare.
In 2002 Tom was the first and only westerner to ever enter the Hong Kong Kung Fu championships where he won first place in the Traditional Styles section against 60 entrants by performing Bik Bo Soi Kiu, a Dragon style form.
In 2003 he entered the Hong Kong Internal Kung Fu championships, again the first and only westerner to try, and won first place in the Non-Weapons section performing Water Boxing against 25 entrants, and third place in the Weapons category performing Tai Chi Sword against 70 entrants.
